Christopher Cassella

Christopher Cassella is an Intellectual Property Litigation associate at Goodwin Procter LLP, focusing primarily on patent disputes within the life sciences sector. His practice encompasses high-stakes patent litigations under the Hatch-Waxman Amendments and the Biologics Price Competition and Innovation Act (BPCIA), representing clients from the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries. He also handles patent litigation involving consumer products and has experience in unfair import investigations before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC). Prior to Goodwin, Mr. Cassella was an associate in the IP Pharmaceutical & Biotechnology practice group at Locke Lord LLP.

Mr. Cassella predominantly represents defendants, particularly biosimilar and generic drug manufacturers. His tracked case appearances, including Regeneron Pharmaceuticals Inc. v. Mylan Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Regeneron Pharmaceuticals, Inc. v. Sandoz Inc., align with his work representing biosimilar drug manufacturers in BPCIA litigation concerning proposed biosimilars to Eylea® (aflibercept), which involved numerous asserted patents. He was also involved in the broader aflibercept BPCIA litigation, which saw a settlement between Samsung and Regeneron in February 2026. He was recognized as a "Top ANDA Litigator" in 2021.

His experience extends to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, where he represents clients in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings. For instance, he represented a generic drug manufacturer in related IPR proceedings concerning an ophthalmic solution. He has also co-authored articles discussing significant developments in biosimilar litigation, such as BPCIA complaints related to pertuzumab and golimumab biosimilars.

Mr. Cassella earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Indiana University Maurer School of Law in 2017. He also holds an M.S. in Biology from Indiana University – Purdue University Indianapolis and a B.A. in Biochemistry from DePauw University. He is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia, Illinois, and before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.
