Christian A. Chu

Christian A. Chu is a seasoned patent litigation attorney whose practice encompasses a wide array of sophisticated technologies, including chemistry, biotechnology, mechanical and electrical engineering, telecommunications, automotive, semiconductor, non-volatile memory, software, displays, and wireless technologies. He possesses significant experience in litigating and resolving complex standard-essential patent disputes. Chu maintains a balanced practice representing both plaintiffs and defendants, with a track record of defending operating companies against infringement claims and asserting patent rights on behalf of technology innovators. His five tracked appearances reflect experience on both the plaintiff (2 cases) and defendant (3 cases) sides.

Currently a Principal at Fish & Richardson, Mr. Chu has been with the firm since rejoining after clerkships, having previously worked there as a litigation law clerk and summer associate from 1999 to 2001. A prominent recent success includes his role on the appellate team for LG Electronics Inc. v. Intellectual Ventures entities, where Fish & Richardson secured a favorable Delaware Supreme Court victory for LG, affirming a jury verdict and reviving $12.8 million in damages in a dispute over a patent license agreement. He also secured a precedential Federal Circuit victory for LG Electronics in Mondis Technology Ltd. v. LG Electronics Inc., which concluded a decade-long patent dispute by reversing a $14.3 million judgment and invalidating asserted claims for lacking adequate written description. This outcome was recognized as one of Managing IP's 2026 Impact Cases of the Year. His experience extends to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), where he has successfully convinced the PTAB to institute inter partes review (IPR) proceedings against patents in parallel to district court litigation, such as in Bell Northern Research LLC v. LG Electronics Inc.

Chu is also noted for his trial experience in district courts and before the U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC), where he has been recognized as a leading international trade patent attorney. He achieved significant ITC wins for LG Electronics, including the withdrawal of a complaint by InterDigital and a finding of non-infringement in another case, where he led a joint defense group of numerous respondents. Other notable engagements include representing Taiwan Semiconductor Mfg. Co. Ltd. in responsive patent infringement lawsuits against GlobalFoundries, leading to a favorable settlement, and representing Seagate Technology in ITC enforcement of hard disk drive patents, which also settled favorably.

Mr. Chu earned his J.D., Order of the Coif, from the University of California, Berkeley School of Law in 2001, where he was an editor of the Berkeley Technology Law Journal. He holds a B.A., magna cum laude, in biochemistry from Harvard University, awarded in 1997. He served as a judicial clerk for the Honorable Raymond C. Clevenger III of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (2002-2003) and for former Chief Judge Marilyn L. Huff of the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of California (2001-2002). He is admitted to the State Bar of California.
