Bryan Christopher Nese

Bryan C. Nese is a patent litigation partner at Mayer Brown, focusing on complex disputes in district courts and before the International Trade Commission (ITC). With a background as a registered patent attorney and mechanical engineer, his practice spans a wide array of technologies, including computer products and peripherals, image sensors, automotive technology, medical devices, electromechanical devices, and consumer products. His technical expertise allows him to handle cases ranging from fluid mechanics to highly complex semiconductor devices.

Nese is adept at representing both plaintiffs and defendants. He advises clients on leveraging their intellectual property assets for affirmative recovery, including patent portfolio monetization. His experience includes securing a $111.7 million jury verdict for Maxell Ltd. against Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd. for willful infringement of smart device patents, which covered technologies like unlocking devices, locating recordings, and managing digital data. He also achieved a favorable settlement for Maxell in a patent infringement suit against Apple Inc. involving image processing, GPS, and battery-saver technologies. On the defense side, Nese notably led a Mayer Brown team that secured a judgment of non-infringement for Autel Intelligent Technology Corp. in a case involving tire pressure monitoring technology, reversing an initial jury verdict. He also obtained a complete victory of no infringement on summary judgment, upheld on Federal Circuit appeal, for an unnamed client.

Nese possesses significant experience with Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceedings at the Patent Office. He notably drafted the first IPR petition for one of the country's oldest and largest IP firms prior to joining Mayer Brown, and has since invalidated challenged claims of non-practicing entity patents for a Fortune 100 company through IPRs.

He earned his J.D. from George Washington University Law School, an M.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Pennsylvania State University, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, magna cum laude, from Rowan University. Nese is admitted to practice in New York, the District of Columbia, and New Jersey.
