Ali S. Razai

Ali S. Razai is a first-chair patent litigator with a focus on high-stakes intellectual property disputes, representing clients in federal district courts, federal appellate courts, the International Trade Commission (ITC), and the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). His practice areas primarily involve biotechnology, medical devices, pharmaceuticals, green technology, consumer products, and mechanical devices. With a background in molecular biology and experience as an antibody engineer, he brings a technical understanding to complex IP challenges.

Razai has experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants in patent litigation. Of his nine tracked appearances, six have been on the plaintiff side and three on the defendant side. He frequently acts as lead counsel. Notable plaintiff-side engagements include numerous cases for HydraFacial LLC, where he has achieved favorable outcomes in IPR proceedings, including one instance where an IPR was de-instituted based on ITC findings of commercial success and patent validity, and a district court upholding patent validity. On the defense side, he represented Luxottica Group S.p.A. in a case against E-Vision Optics, LLC, and was involved in an IPR where the PTAB found challenged claims unpatentable.

His career includes significant PTAB experience, where he has secured decisive victories. For example, he led a team for Spectrum Solutions LLC to an "unprecedented" victory in IPR challenges against Longhorn Vaccines & Diagnostics, resulting in the cancellation of all 183 claims across five patents due to the patent owner's "egregious abuse of the PTAB process". He also contributed commentary on Federal Circuit rulings impacting PTAB strategy.

Razai is currently a partner at Morgan, Lewis & Bockius LLP in Orange County, California, having joined the firm in February 2025 as part of a five-partner IP litigation team from Knobbe Martens. He spent 18 years at Knobbe Martens. He was admitted to the State Bar of California in 2006 and is also admitted to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office. He earned his Juris Doctor from the University of California College of the Law, San Francisco, in 2006, and holds a B.S. degree from the University of California at Los Angeles.
