Company profile

Twitch Interactive, Inc., commonly known as Twitch, is a live-streaming video platform headquartered in San Francisco, California. Founded in 2011 as a spin-off of the general-interest streaming site Justin.tv, it is a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN), which acquired it in August 2014 for approximately $970 million. As a private subsidiary, Twitch does not release its own detailed financial reports, and public estimates of its revenue and employee count vary significantly.

The company operates a platform primarily focused on video game live streaming, including broadcasts of esports competitions, but has expanded to include a wide variety of other content such as music broadcasts, creative arts, and "in real life" streams. Content creators, or "streamers," can earn revenue through subscriptions, viewer donations (called "Bits"), and advertising. The service allows viewers to interact with streamers and other viewers in real-time through a chat function. Twitch also offers developer tools, including an API and a managed live streaming solution called Amazon Interactive Video Service (IVS).

As an operating company, Twitch's patent litigation posture appears to be defensive. The provided data shows Twitch as a plaintiff in one case before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and as a defendant in none. This plaintiff filing is a common strategy for companies that have been sued for infringement, allowing them to proactively challenge the validity of the patents being asserted against them.

The single tracked case, Twitch Interactive, Inc. et al. v. NL Giken Inc., reflects this defensive posture. In January 2024, an inventor-controlled Japanese entity, NL Giken Inc., sued Amazon and Twitch in the District of Delaware for infringing patents related to video streaming and processing. In response, Twitch and its parent company Amazon filed petitions for inter partes review (IPR) at the PTAB in late 2024, challenging the validity of NL Giken's patents. This action aims to invalidate the patents at the patent office, thereby undermining the basis of the district court infringement lawsuit.
