Motorola Mobility LLC, commonly known as Motorola, is a United States-based consumer electronics manufacturer headquartered in Chicago, Illinois. The company was formed on January 4, 2011, following a split from the original Motorola Inc., with Motorola Mobility assuming the consumer-oriented product lines. Since 2014, Motorola Mobility has been a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Chinese technology conglomerate Lenovo. The company maintains a significant global workforce, with employee counts varying across sources, but generally in the several thousands, and estimated annual revenues in the billions.

Motorola Mobility primarily designs and manufactures Android-based smartphones, including popular lines such as the Razr, Edge, Moto G, Moto E, and ThinkPhone families. Beyond smartphones, its product portfolio extends to various mobile accessories like smartwatches, headphones, and portable speakers. The company also offers smart home products, including modems, routers, and smart nursery monitors.

In terms of patent litigation, Motorola Mobility operates as an active two-way litigant, appearing in both plaintiff and defendant roles in U.S. district courts. The company is involved in two tracked cases: one as a plaintiff, Motorola Mobility LLC v. Maxell, Ltd., filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, and one as a defendant, Maxell, Ltd. v. Lenovo Group Ltd. et al., in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Texas. The Western District of Texas is recognized as a venue popular for patent assertion entities.

A notable aspect of Motorola Mobility's history involves its patent portfolio. Google acquired Motorola Mobility in 2012 primarily to gain its extensive patent holdings, intending to use them to protect other Android vendors from litigation. However, Google subsequently sold the majority of Motorola Mobility's patent portfolio along with the company itself to Lenovo in 2014. The ongoing dispute with Maxell, Ltd. involves a patent infringement claim initiated by Maxell against Lenovo and Motorola Mobility in Texas, prompting Motorola Mobility to file a declaratory judgment action in Illinois concerning the same patents. Motorola Mobility has also been involved in other significant patent disputes, including with Apple Inc. and Ericsson AB, with the latter resulting in a settlement in 2025.
