Gigex, Inc.: From Content Delivery Pioneer to Patent Assertor
Gigex, Inc. is a privately held technology company founded in 2000 by entrepreneur Mark Friedler. Initially established in New York, Gigex pioneered large-file content delivery, creating one of the internet's first cloud services for distributing large files like game demos and trailers. The company's current headquarters are in the Reno, Nevada area. While specific employee and revenue figures are not publicly available, the company now operates as a technology and management consultancy.
Today, Gigex provides consulting and procurement services for big data, SaaS, and cloud services. It also offers advisory services in the blockchain and cryptocurrency sectors. The company leverages its history in large-scale cloud services to assist clients with technology infrastructure and strategy. Historically, Gigex was a significant operator in the online gaming space; it acquired the gaming content site GameDaily, which was later sold to AOL Time Warner in 2006.
Gigex's patent litigation activity consists solely of asserting its own patents. The company has appeared as a plaintiff in all three of its tracked cases and has never been a defendant. This litigation pattern, focused on asserting patents against other technology companies, positions Gigex as a patent assertion entity, although one with a history of technology development and operations, distinguishing it from a non-practicing entity (NPE) that exists solely to litigate.
In March 2017, Gigex initiated all three of its tracked lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware, a common venue for patent cases. The defendants were major technology companies: AOL LLC, Apple Inc., and Yahoo! Inc. The lawsuits alleged that the defendants' services for delivering online content and software updates infringed on a Gigex patent related to methods for data delivery. The case against Yahoo, for instance, concerned U.S. Patent 5,768,528 and was later dismissed by joint stipulation, suggesting a settlement was reached.
