Company profile

The California Institute of Technology (Caltech) is a private research university in Pasadena, California. Founded by Amos G. Throop in 1891, it adopted its current name in 1920. Caltech is a world-renowned science and engineering institute with a small student body of approximately 1,000 undergraduates and 1,250 graduate students, and around 300 professorial faculty members. As a private, independent institution, it is supported by a significant endowment, which reached a market value of $4.3 billion at the end of fiscal year 2024.

Caltech is organized into six academic divisions with a strong emphasis on science and engineering, including programs in physics, mathematics, astronomy, computer science, and various engineering disciplines. Beyond its educational programs, Caltech is a major research center. It manages and operates NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), a leading center for robotic exploration of the solar system. The university also operates a global network of astronomical observatories, including the Palomar and W. M. Keck Observatories, and co-manages the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO).

As a major research university, Caltech develops and patents its own technology and actively asserts its intellectual property rights. The institution's litigation profile shows it acting as a plaintiff to enforce its patent portfolio, which is consistent with an operating entity monetizing its own research and development rather than acquiring patents for assertion. The single tracked case occurred in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California.

Caltech has been involved in high-profile patent litigation. In 2016, the university filed a lawsuit against Apple and Broadcom, alleging that Wi-Fi chips used in numerous Apple products infringed on Caltech patents related to wireless data transmission technology. A federal jury in 2020 ordered Apple and Broadcom to pay Caltech over $1.1 billion in damages, one of the largest patent verdicts in history at the time. While the damages award was later subject to appeal and a new trial was ordered, the case highlights the significant value of the intellectual property generated by Caltech's research activities.
