Akamai Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: AKAM) — Cambridge, Massachusetts–based internet infrastructure and security company founded in 1998 and incorporated in Delaware. It is a standalone public company with no parent; founder F. Thomson Leighton is CEO. Akamai reports roughly 11,000 employees and FY2025 revenue of about $4.2 billion, with market capitalization fluctuating in the mid-to-high teens of billions (source: Akamai 10-K and company facts page; Yahoo Finance/PitchBook).
Products / services. Akamai operates a distributed edge and cloud network (Akamai Connected Cloud) spanning thousands of points of presence globally, sold across three core lines: security (web application and API protection, bot management and account protection, DDoS mitigation, and zero-trust/microsegmentation via the 2021 Guardicore acquisition); content delivery (web and mobile performance, media delivery, global traffic management); and compute (cloud computing and edge workloads). It has expanded by acquisition, including Neosec (2023) and Noname Security (2024) for API security.
Patent-litigation posture. Akamai is an operating company, not an NPE. The tracked data shows one suit as defendant and one PTAB proceeding as "plaintiff" — the latter is an inter partes review petition, a defensive validity challenge rather than an infringement assertion. Its litigation posture is therefore that of a large technology company defending against an external patent holder.
Notable cases. Equil IP Holdings LLC v. Akamai Technologies, Inc. (D. Del., filed May 2022) asserted patents originally held by Equilibrium (MediaRich), covering optimized media delivery, against Akamai's Image and Video Manager product. Equil IP acquired the portfolio via a December 2021 assignment — a classic NPE-style transfer. Akamai petitioned for IPR (PTAB, IPR2023-00330); the Board denied institution on the merits in 2023. Akamai then sought ex parte reexamination of the '745 patent; the USPTO upheld all challenged claims (July 2025). The Delaware case was stayed and later administratively closed pending reexamination, a procedural rather than merits disposition. The matter is in the District of Delaware, not the Eastern District of Texas.
