Roku petitioned for inter partes review of the '276 patent. The PTAB instituted review and in a Final Written Decision determined that 14 challenged claims were unpatentable as obvious over Hart-787, Fu, and Rosenberg, while two claims were found not unpatentable but were not at issue on appeal.

Universal Electronics appealed the PTAB's Final Written Decision invalidating challenged claims of the '276 patent. The Federal Circuit affirmed, rejecting UEI's arguments about the Board's adoption of a modification, the order of claimed method steps, and substantial evidence for the motivation-to-combine finding.
