Company profile

Zentrum Mikroelektronik Dresden GmbH (historically Zentrum Mikroelektronik Dresden AG; commonly "ZMD", "ZMDI") is a German semiconductor designer headquartered at Grenzstraße 28, 01109 Dresden. Its corporate lineage dates to 1961, when it was founded as an East German state microelectronics research and production combine; it was later privatized and operated as a private, PE-backed company. Ownership has since changed hands twice: Integrated Device Technology (IDT) acquired ZMDI on 7 December 2015 for roughly $307–310 million in cash, and after Renesas Electronics acquired IDT in 2019 the Dresden entity was renamed Renesas Electronics Germany GmbH (previously IDT Europe GmbH). Reported size at the time of the IDT deal was on the order of 300–400 employees worldwide, with fiscal 2014 group revenue of about €61 million.

Products and operations. ZMDI was a fabless analog and mixed-signal IC supplier serving automotive, industrial, medical, and mobile-sensing markets. Its lines included sensor signal conditioners, battery-management ICs, LED drivers and lighting ICs, digital/high-performance power-management devices, and application-specific ICs (ASICs) and ASSPs, some rated for operating temperatures up to +160 °C and voltages from 0.85 V to 40 V. It divested its wafer fab to the X-FAB group in 2007 and subsequently sourced foundry capacity from X-FAB, keeping in-house design centers (Dresden, Stuttgart, Munich, Varna/Sofia, Limerick, Madison, WI) and test operations in Dresden.

Litigation posture. The database shows exactly one tracked case and zero plaintiff-side suits, marking ZMDI as an operating company defending an infringement claim rather than a patent asserter. It was named a defendant in Azure Networks LLC et al. v. Texas Instruments Incorporated et al. (6:10-cv-00681, E.D. Tex., Tyler Division, filed 22 December 2010), alongside TI, Freescale, NXP, Atmel, Microchip, and its own U.S. subsidiary ZMD America.

Context. The plaintiffs were Azure Networks LLC and Tri-County Excelsior Foundation, asserting acquired U.S. Patent 7,020,501 ("Energy Efficient Forwarding in Ad-Hoc Wireless Networks"), originally assigned to BBN Technologies, against RF transceiver products — a classic NPE-style campaign filed in the plaintiff-friendly Eastern District of Texas. ZMDI's appearance reflects its wireless/sensor-IC product line rather than any assertion activity of its own.
