Technicolor SA (Euronext Paris: TCH; OTCQX: TCLRY) was a French media-and-entertainment technology group headquartered in Paris, tracing its lineage to Thomson SA/Thomson Multimedia and renamed Technicolor SA on 27 January 2010. It was publicly listed. On 27 September 2022 it spun off 65% of Technicolor Creative Studios and renamed itself Vantiva SA (Euronext Paris: VANTI) — the entity in the case data now operates under that name. Technicolor reported roughly €2.9bn revenue and 16,676 employees for FY2021; post-spin Vantiva is smaller (about €2bn revenue, ~4,300 employees, per FT/LSEG data).
Operations spanned Connected Home (broadband gateways, cable/DSL modems, Android TV set-top boxes, largely acquired from Cisco in 2015), DVD/optical-disc manufacturing and supply-chain services, pre-spin VFX and animation studios (MPC, The Mill, Mikros Animation, later Technicolor Creative Studios), and trademark licensing of RCA/Thomson brands (sold 2022). It sold its patent-licensing business, and later its R&D activity, to InterDigital for $475m in 2018–19.
Litigation posture: purely defensive. Technicolor SA appears once, as a defendant, with zero plaintiff-side filings — consistent with an operating company defending against an NPE rather than a licensor. The suit, CommWorks Solutions, LLC v. Technicolor USA Inc. et al., also named subsidiary Technicolor Connected Home USA LLC and was filed 18 July 2022 in the N.D. Ga. before Judge Steve C. Jones.
Context: CommWorks Solutions is a Georgia-based NPE affiliated with IP Investments Group. It acquired the asserted Wi-Fi/WMM/WPS patents (e.g., US 6,891,807; RE44,904; 7,463,596) from Intellectual Ventures and ran a multi-defendant 2022 campaign against router and gateway vendors; Unified Patents has pursued ex parte reexamination of the portfolio. CommWorks sued in its home district rather than the Eastern District of Texas. Technicolor answered on 17 October 2022, identifying Vantiva SA as corporate parent. The suit targeted the Connected Home business that became Vantiva, not the spun-off Creative Studios unit, which later ceased operations.
