Company profile

Pantech Co., Ltd. (Pantech; Korean: 주식회사 팬택) is a South Korean telecommunications and devices company founded in 1991 (some sources give 1990) and headquartered in Seoul. It was once Korea's third-largest handset maker and was listed on the Korea Exchange in 2005. After two debt workouts and a 2014 court receivership, it was acquired in 2015 by an SMA Solution Holdings consortium — Solid Inc. (96%) and Optis Inc. (4%) — which bought roughly 4,099 brand and IP assets and carried over about 500 employees. Peak scale was ~12,300 employees and about $2.8 billion revenue in 2011 (Wikipedia); by 2016 revenue had fallen to roughly 51.4 billion won against a 70.6 billion won net loss, and headcount dropped to around 120–150. I could not verify current (2026) employee or revenue figures from a reliable source.

Operations. Pantech designed and manufactured mobile handsets — feature phones and smartphones under the SKY and VEGA brands — including U.S. carrier models for AT&T and Verizon, plus tablets and connected/IoT devices. Following the 2015 acquisition it pivoted toward IoT, automotive, defense and home-automation connected devices. It suspended its smartphone business in May 2017, retaining only some IoT and after-sales operations. It remains an operating company, not a shell licensor, though its IP portfolio (~2,000+ Korean and 1,100+ overseas registered patents as of end-2016) has been cited as a potential monetization asset.

Litigation posture. Pantech appears in the tracked data only as a defendant (0 plaintiff cases, 2 defendant cases), consistent with an operating company being targeted, not an asserter. Both suits — Delaware Display Group LLC et al. v. Pantech Co., Ltd., No. 1:13-cv-02110, and a related Delaware Display Group action — were filed in the U.S. District Court for the District of Delaware.

Context. Delaware Display Group LLC is an Acacia Research subsidiary (Acacia Research Group LLC and Acacia Research Corporation are named real parties-in-interest in related IPRs). The Pantech suit was part of a December 31, 2013 wave of complaints asserting acquired LCD backlight/light-emitting-panel patents (the Jeffery R. Parker family, e.g., U.S. 6,755,547; 7,300,194; 7,434,973) against Amazon, HTC, Lenovo, LG, Sony and VIZIO; companion Innovative Display Technologies cases were filed in the Eastern District of Texas.
