Nortel Networks, Inc. (NNI) was the principal U.S. operating and research subsidiary of Nortel Networks Corporation (NNC), the Canadian telecom equipment maker commonly called "Nortel." NNC was headquartered in Mississauga, Ontario; NNI's U.S. operations included offices in Nashville, Tennessee. The corporate lineage traces to Northern Electric (1895), with Northern Electric Company, Limited incorporated in 1914, renamed Northern Telecom in 1976 and Nortel Networks in 1998–99. Nortel was publicly traded (NYSE/TSX: NT). At its peak it reported roughly 70,000 employees and about US$22 billion in 1999 sales (ReferenceForBusiness company profile). NNC, NNI and affiliates filed for Chapter 11 protection on January 14, 2009 in the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the District of Delaware (Case No. 09-10138); equity interests were cancelled and the group wound down.

Vonage filed a declaratory-judgment action against Nortel seeking a declaration that U.S. Patent Nos. 6,091,808, 6,445,695, and 7,050,861 are invalid, void, and/or unenforceable. Nortel counterclaimed alleging Vonage induced infringement of the '808 patent. The parties settled and agreed to dismiss all claims and counterclaims without prejudice in 2008.
Vonage Holding Inc. filed a patent action against Nortel Networks Inc. and Nortel Networks Ltd. in the District of Delaware.
