Company overview. Mercedes-Benz U.S. International, Inc. (MBUSI) is the U.S. manufacturing subsidiary of Mercedes-Benz Group AG (Frankfurt/XETRA: MBG), the German automaker. Its plant is at 1 Mercedes Drive, Vance, Alabama (Tuscaloosa County); the site was announced in 1993 and began production in 1997, the first major Mercedes-Benz passenger-car plant outside Germany. The Mercedes-Benz Group location page lists roughly 5,800 employees; a 2026 al.com report cites about 6,100. It is privately held (wholly owned by the parent) and therefore has no separate ticker, revenue, or market-cap disclosure. The company announced a planned $4 billion expansion through 2030, on top of more than $7 billion already invested.
Products / operations. MBUSI is a vehicle assembly operation, not a technology vendor. It builds Mercedes-Benz SUVs for global markets — the GLE, GLE Coupe, GLS, and Mercedes-Maybach GLS — and since 2022 the all-electric EQS SUV and EQE SUV, plus the Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV from 2023. Its Bibb County battery plant produces lithium-ion packs for those EVs. Roughly two-thirds of annual output is exported, making it one of the largest U.S. automotive exporters.
Patent-litigation posture. MBUSI is an operating company and a pure defendant: 0 plaintiff cases, 1 defendant case in the tracked data. That single suit, filed April 24, 2014 in the Eastern District of Texas (2:14-cv-00535), was brought by Innovative Display Technologies LLC, an Acacia Research Corporation subsidiary characterized in Stanford's NPE database as an acquired-patent asserter. The venue and the one-way posture are consistent with a manufacturing defendant targeted by an NPE rather than a two-way litigant.
Case context. IDT asserted a family of "light emitting panel assembly" patents — including the '563, '547, '956, '194, '177, '660, '974 and '816 patents — covering backlights for LCDs and automotive lighting such as headlights and taillights. Mercedes-Benz USA, LLC and MBUSI jointly petitioned for inter partes review of several of these patents (e.g., IPR2015-00361, IPR2015-01113). Acacia disclosed in a June 2015 Form 8-K that IDT and Delaware Display Group settled and licensed the dispute with MBUSI and Mercedes-Benz USA; the district court case closed February 8, 2016.
