Company overview. Hamamatsu Corp. is the North American marketing and sales subsidiary of Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. (Tokyo Stock Exchange Prime: 6965), a Japanese optoelectronics group founded in 1953 as Hamamatsu TV Co. and renamed in 1983. Hamamatsu Corp. is a New Jersey corporation headquartered in Bridgewater, NJ, wholly owned through holding company Photonics Management Corp. Court filings in its 2015 suit state it distributes parent products in North America and sets its own resale prices, but "does not develop, design, or engage in large-scale manufacturing in the United States." Parent group figures (FY ended Sept. 30, 2025): ¥212.0 billion consolidated net sales (~$1.4B), roughly 6,600 employees, ¥35.2B capital.
Products / services. The parent develops and sells optoelectronic devices and systems: photomultiplier tubes, imaging devices and image sensors (including photodiodes, avalanche photodiodes and CCD sensors), opto-semiconductors, light sources, laser equipment and components, and imaging/measurement and analysis systems. Markets include medical, industrial, analytical measurement and academic research; R&D is about 8.7% of sales.
Patent-litigation posture. An operating company, not an NPE. In the tracked data it appears only as a defendant (0 plaintiff cases, 1 defendant case), consistent with a product manufacturer being sued rather than a licensor asserting an acquired portfolio. The single tracked matter was filed in the District of Massachusetts, not a plaintiff-friendly venue such as the Eastern District of Texas.
Notable case. SiOnyx, LLC et al. v. Hamamatsu Photonics K.K. et al., No. 1:15-cv-13488-FDS (D. Mass., filed Oct. 1, 2015; Judge F. Dennis Saylor IV). Plaintiffs SiOnyx and the President and Fellows of Harvard College asserted black-silicon/laser-textured photodetector patents plus contract claims arising from a 2007 nondisclosure agreement. A May 2019 jury found breach of contract, unjust enrichment, willful infringement of U.S. Patent 8,080,467, and correction of inventorship; the court awarded approximately $1.9M and $1.2M on the contract claims and transferred ownership of nine Hamamatsu patents to SiOnyx.
