Company profile

I'll research this company before writing the profile.

Let me verify the corporate history and ownership details.

Company overview. Emaginet Inc. was founded in August 1996 and headquartered in Bethesda, Maryland. It operated an online promotions and electronic-coupon business under the "e-centives" brand, then renamed itself e-centives Inc. and, from May 2007, Invenda Corporation. Early funding included Swiss investor Friedli Corporate Finance; PitchBook reports roughly $64 million raised across three rounds. The company later became a public reporting entity (ticker INVN) but ceased filing with the SEC in January 2009. Size was small — about 42 employees as of December 31, 2007, with PitchBook listing 51. Its e-centives and Collabrys business units were sold to Catalina Marketing in 2010.

Products / services. e-centives distributed targeted electronic coupons and promotional offers through portal partners including Excite, iVillage and ZDNet, with print-at-home redemption and consumer profiling. It expanded by acquisition into comparison shopping (Inktomi's commerce division), consumer reviews (Consumer Review — MTBR.com, RoadBikeReview.com) and print-at-home grocery coupons (BrightStreet). From 2002 it sold an interactive CRM platform to consumer-packaged-goods clients under the Collabrys brand. This was an operating company with real products and customers, not a shell licensor.

Patent-litigation posture. The tracked data shows one case, in which the company was a defendant and never a plaintiff — consistent with an operating company being attacked rather than a dedicated assertion entity. Venues were ordinary commercial districts (N.D. Illinois and D. Maryland), not the Eastern District of Texas.

Notable cases and context. In CoolSavings.com, Inc. v. Emaginet Inc., CoolSavings sued in Chicago federal court; the company countersued in the District of Maryland and the suits settled in October 2000. Around that dispute it acquired a patent ("Electronic couponing method and apparatus") from SellectSoft and later countersued CoolSavings on it. Press reports outside our tracked dataset also describe e-centives suing Coupons Inc. in a Maryland federal court in 2003 on two print-at-home coupon patents, claiming roughly five US patents at the time — indicating a historically two-way litigant asserting a small couponing portfolio.

CoolSavings.com, Inc. (a/k/a Interactive Coupon Marketing Group, Inc., d/b/a CoolSavings) v. Emaginet Inc. (later/reportedly known as e-centives Inc.)

settled
Patents:5761648

CoolSavings sued Emaginet Inc. (later/reportedly known as e-centives Inc.) over the '648 patent, filing by Oct. 20, 1998 (reported as filed Aug. 1998). E-centives counter-sued CoolSavings for infringement in D. Maryland on April 27, 1999, asserting a purchased patent ('Electronic couponing method and apparatus'). The case settled after E-centives' validity/obviousness defense.
