Company profile

Corel Corporation

Corel Corporation is a Canadian software company founded in 1985 and headquartered in Ottawa, Ontario. In 2019, the private equity firm KKR acquired Corel for a reported $1 billion. The company briefly rebranded as Alludo in 2022 but returned to the Corel name. As of early 2026, Corel announced plans to separate its business, with private equity firm Vector Capital acquiring Corel's creativity and productivity software portfolio, while KKR will retain ownership of the Parallels business as a separate entity. The company has over 1,000 employees and estimated annual revenues in the range of $165 million to $350 million.

Corel develops and markets a portfolio of software for graphics, productivity, and digital media. Its most recognized product lines include CorelDRAW Graphics Suite for vector illustration and design, WordPerfect Office for productivity, PaintShop Pro for photo editing, Painter for digital art, VideoStudio for video editing, and WinZip for file compression and management. Through acquisitions, the company also owns brands such as Roxio (CD/DVD burning software), Pinnacle (video editing), and MindManager (mind mapping software). The Parallels brand, known for its virtualization software that allows running Windows on Mac computers, is being spun off into an independent company.

As a patent litigant, Corel is an operating company that defends against patent assertions. The company's record of zero cases as a plaintiff and one as a defendant supports this posture. Its single tracked case was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Washington, which is not known as a plaintiff-friendly venue.

The company's only tracked patent suit is Walker Digital, LLC v. Microsoft Corp. et al., filed in 2010. Corel was one of many technology companies sued by Walker Digital, a research and development lab founded by inventor Jay S. Walker, which has been characterized as a non-practicing entity (NPE) or "patent troll." Walker Digital has filed numerous patent infringement lawsuits against over 100 defendants, including major technology firms like Google, Amazon, and Microsoft, across a wide range of technologies.
