Brookstone, Inc. (commonly "Brookstone") is a US consumer-products brand and retailer. It was founded in 1965 by Pierre and Mary de Beaumont as a catalog seller of specialty tools, opened its first store in 1973, and is headquartered in Merrimack, New Hampshire. It is privately held and has changed hands repeatedly: Quaker Oats (1980–86), an investor group including Greylock and Fidelity Ventures, then Osim International/J.W. Childs/Temasek (2005). After Chapter 11 in 2014 it was bought by Sailing Capital and Sanpower for over $173M, and after a second Chapter 11 in 2018 the brand and trademarks were acquired by Bluestar Alliance (with Bebe Stores and Apex Digital). Hudson Group (NYSE: HUD, a Dufry company) acquired the 34 US airport Brookstone store assets from Apex Digital in 2019 and operates them under license from Bluestar. Public size data is dated: roughly 300 stores and about $430M in sales as of 2009–2011 (NYT), falling to 34 locations by October 2018 (Wikipedia). Current employee and revenue figures are not publicly verified.
Products / operations. Brookstone is an operating retailer and product developer of consumer gadgets and gifts, not a patent holder asserting rights. Offerings have included massage chairs and personal-care devices, travel and wellness items, home and kitchen goods, speakers and audio, remote-control toys and drones, and other lifestyle electronics, largely sold under the Brookstone own-brand. Distribution has shifted from mall stores, catalogs and e-commerce to airport retail and Brookstone.com.
Patent-litigation posture. The case data shows 0 cases as plaintiff and 1 as defendant — the classic profile of an operating company on the receiving end, not an NPE. The sole tracked matter is Align Technology, Inc. v. SmileCareClub LLC et al., filed 22 Oct 2015 in the Northern District of California (San Jose). Align asserted 14 clear-aligner patents plus false advertising and unfair competition claims against SmileCareClub, Camelot SI (SharperImage.com) and Brookstone; Brookstone was named as a downstream marketer/reseller of the SmileCareClub system. The venue is Align's home district, not a plaintiff-friendly EDTX forum.
Context. The suit reflected the 2015 direct-to-consumer clear-aligner disputes; SmileCareClub later became part of SmileDirectClub, which Align invested in during 2016. No litigation-financing or NPE involvement is indicated.
