Basis Science, Inc. (formerly Pulse Tracer, Inc.) was a privately held consumer-wearables developer headquartered at 1200 Folsom Street, San Francisco, California. It was founded around 2011 by Bharat Vasan and Nadeem Kassam (some databases list a 2004 founding, others 2010–2011; sources conflict). It was venture-backed, raising roughly $32–37 million from investors including Norwest Venture Partners, DCM Ventures, Mayfield Fund, Intel Capital, and Dolby-affiliated funds. Intel Corporation acquired Basis Science in March 2014; press reports put the price near $100 million, though terms were undisclosed. At the time of acquisition the company had about 60 employees.
Products / operations. Basis Science developed the Basis Band, a wrist-worn health and activity tracker (retail ~$199) paired with a web and mobile dashboard. The device used multiple sensors to measure heart rate, motion, perspiration, skin temperature, and sleep stages, and differentiated activities such as walking, running, and cycling. It synced via Bluetooth with iOS and some Android devices. This was a genuine operating company selling consumer hardware and services, not a patent-assertion entity.
