Yun Louise Lu

Yun Louise Lu is a patent litigation attorney with Foley & Lardner, where she is a partner in the Intellectual Property Department and the Innovative Technology Sector. Prior to joining Foley & Lardner, Ms. Lu was a partner at an international law firm in San Diego, identified as Perkins Coie.

Ms. Lu concentrates her practice on patent litigation and invalidity proceedings, representing both startups and major companies, particularly those based in Asia and the United States, in cross-border matters. Her technical focus areas are extensive, including wireless technologies, encryption, video/audio compression, artificial intelligence, 3D printing, smartphone software, computer systems, and semiconductor devices. She frequently handles cases involving standard essential patents (SEPs) and standard-setting issues.

Her patent litigation experience primarily involves defending operating companies. Ms. Lu has counseled TCL in multiple patent litigations concerning mobile devices, smart TVs, wireless technologies, and chip packaging. Notably, in a U.S. International Trade Commission (ITC) investigation (337-TA-1224) involving Koninklijke Philips N.V. against TCL Electronics Holdings Ltd. et al., she served as counsel for the defendants, securing a no-violation initial determination favorable to TCL. She also acted as counsel for defendant Coolpad Technologies in a multi-patent case related to mobile devices. Her tracked federal district court appearance is in Wi-LAN et al. v. TCT Mobile US, Inc., where she represented the defendant.

Ms. Lu possesses significant experience in post-grant proceedings before the U.S. Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), including inter partes review (IPR) and covered business method (CBM) review proceedings. She is admitted to practice in California, before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, various U.S. District Courts in California, and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She earned her J.D. from the University of California, Hastings College of the Law (2007), an M.A. in Intellectual Property from the University of New Hampshire (2004), and a B.S. in Computer Science and Information Engineering from National Taiwan University (1997).
