Vigen Salmastlian

Vigen Salmastlian is a Partner in Fenwick & West's litigation group, where he focuses on high-stakes patent disputes. His practice encompasses a broad range of technologies, including AI, cloud computing, machine learning, natural language processing, video coding, networking and telecommunications, smart home devices, medical devices, e-commerce, location-based services, semiconductors, and analog circuits. He also handles trade secret, cybersecurity, and antitrust litigation.

Salmastlian's experience primarily involves defending technology and life sciences companies against allegations of patent infringement. Notable representations include Amazon in VB Assets, LLC v. Amazon.com Services LLC, a case concerning speech recognition and natural language processing technology, where a jury found willful infringement and awarded $46.7 million in damages. In a separate matter, he successfully invalidated three patents under Section 101 and secured summary judgment of non-infringement for Amazon in a case brought by IPA Technologies. He also represented Novo Nordisk in Hatch-Waxman patent litigation regarding its diabetes drug Victoza®, and Google in patent infringement cases, including prevailing at claim construction for Nest Labs against BRK Brands.

He has significant experience in Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) proceedings, which is listed as one of his practice areas. This experience includes representing Amazon in IPRs related to patents asserted in district court litigation.

Before joining Fenwick & West, Salmastlian was an associate at White & Case LLP. Prior to his legal career, he worked as a Systems Electrical Engineer at Lockheed Martin Space Systems. He earned his J.D. with a High Tech Law Certificate and a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Santa Clara University. He is admitted to practice in California and the Western District of Texas.
