Trenton A. Ward

Trenton A. Ward is a highly experienced patent litigation attorney, currently a Shareholder in Greenberg Traurig's Intellectual Property & Technology Practice and Co-Chair of the firm's Patent Post-Grant Group in Atlanta. His practice encompasses patent litigation before district courts, trials before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), and appeals before the Federal Circuit. He also advises clients on patent prosecution management and broader intellectual property counseling. Ward's technological focus areas are broad, including mobile communication devices, medical devices, semiconductor devices, telecommunications, consumer goods, sporting equipment, and electronics.

Ward primarily represents clients in intellectual property disputes and has appeared as lead counsel for the plaintiff in the tracked case, Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. et al. v. One-E-Way, Inc. This ongoing case, filed in the Western District of Texas, involves allegations of patent infringement related to wireless digital audio music systems, including headphones and speakers, with an associated inter partes review (IPR) proceeding at the PTAB.

A significant aspect of Ward's expertise stems from his prior public service. He served for five years at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, including as a Lead Administrative Patent Judge at the PTAB from 2014-2017 and as an Administrative Patent Judge from 2012-2014. During his tenure at the PTAB, he adjudicated over 250 America Invents Act (AIA) trial proceedings, including inter partes review (IPR) and post-grant review (PGR) proceedings, and has advocated in more than 50 such trials since returning to private practice. He is recognized for his deep knowledge of PTAB procedures and frequently speaks and publishes on patent law topics, particularly concerning the PTAB.

Prior to joining Greenberg Traurig, Ward was a partner at Finnegan, Henderson, Farabow, Garrett & Dunner, LLP. He earned his J.D. from Emory University School of Law in 2003 and holds a B.E.E. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Institute of Technology, awarded in 1999. Ward is admitted to practice in Georgia, before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Georgia, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. His professional standing is further highlighted by his recognition in The Best Lawyers in America for Patent Law and Litigation - Patent, including being named "Lawyer of the Year" for Patent Law in Atlanta for 2025.
