Suparna Datta

Dr. Suparna Datta is a patent litigator with extensive experience in high-technology disputes before federal district courts, the International Trade Commission (ITC), and the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Leveraging her background as a registered patent attorney and her doctorate in electrical and computer engineering, she focuses on complex technologies including semiconductors, wireless communications, medical devices, payment processing, consumer electronics, digital signal processing, graphics processors, video codecs, video streaming, telecommunications, distributed computing, and standard-essential patents. She also advises on intellectual property issues in complex mergers and acquisitions, including open-source software audits.

While tracked appearances show one defendant-side representation, Dr. Datta's practice descriptions indicate a broad role in defending clients in high-tech patent disputes. She joined Buchalter as a Partner in its Intellectual Property practice group in April 2026, based in the firm's Los Angeles and San Francisco offices. Prior to Buchalter, she was a partner at Mintz and an associate and patent attorney at an Am Law 50 firm. She also served as Of Counsel at Maynard & Gale (now Maynard).

A notable case in her practice is ETN Capital LLC v. Airxcel, Inc., where she represented the defendant. This district court case involved a patent related to wireless RV leveling technology. A related appeal, FBA Operating Co. v. ETN Capital (Beech Lane), concerning the same patent (US10890925B2), was remanded by the Federal Circuit in July 2025 following a joint settlement, with ETN Capital withdrawing a motion for attorneys' fees. Dr. Datta's experience extends to post-grant proceedings, including inter partes reviews (IPRs) and ex parte reexaminations, with a related IPR (IPR2024-01445, ETN Capital LLC v. FBA Operating Co.) challenging the same RV leveling patent.

Dr. Datta is admitted to the bars of California, Alabama, District of Columbia, Massachusetts, and New York, and is registered with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. She earned her JD from Suffolk University Law School, her PhD and MS in electrical and computer engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology, and her BS and BA in electrical engineering and mathematics from Cornell University.
