Specialty & background
Steven E. Feldman is a highly experienced patent litigator and the head of Hahn Loeser & Parks LLP's Intellectual Property Practice Area, where he also serves as Partner-in-Charge of the firm's Chicago office and a member of its Board of Directors. His practice spans complex intellectual property litigation, prosecution, licensing, and counseling across a diverse range of technologies. With a background in materials science and engineering, his technical focus areas include pharmaceuticals and biotechnology (particularly Hatch-Waxman and biosimilar disputes), medical devices, automotive and aerospace materials, water and resource management, and alternative energy technologies. He also handles matters involving trade secrets, trademarks, unfair competition, copyrights, and data privacy.
While the tracked case indicates a plaintiff-side appearance, Mr. Feldman demonstrates extensive experience representing both plaintiffs and defendants in high-stakes patent disputes. He has notably served as lead counsel for generic pharmaceutical companies, successfully challenging patents and defending against infringement claims. He also has a strong track record of defending clients against significant patent-related claims.
His notable representations include securing summary judgment of noninfringement for Apotex in patent litigation related to the drug Antara, and achieving summary judgment of patent invalidity for Apotex concerning a generic version of the osteoporosis drug Boniva, which was affirmed by the Federal Circuit. Mr. Feldman also successfully defended against a $500 million patent misuse and exhaustion claim for Minebea Co. and has extensive experience in pharmaceutical litigations involving drugs such as Norvasc and Floxin Otic, the latter resulting in a $5 million award for a generic client.
Mr. Feldman also advises clients on IPRs and appeals before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) at the USPTO, as well as European Patent Opposition proceedings. He earned his J.D., with honors, from George Washington University Law School in 1995 and a B.S. in Materials Science and Engineering from Northwestern University in 1992. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court and the Illinois Supreme Court.
