Stephen B. Barone

Stephen B. Barone, Ph.D., is a patent attorney with a practice focused on intellectual property strategy, technology commercialization, and portfolio management. His technical expertise spans the intersection of chemistry, physics, and the life sciences, encompassing areas such as pharmaceuticals, polymers, chemical synthesis, catalysis, medical devices, nanotechnology, medical imaging and diagnostics, drug screening, research tools, materials science, semiconductor materials and processing, optics and optoelectronics, electronic materials, and instrumentation. This background is reflected in his involvement in cases such as TOPSOE, INC. v. L'Air Liquide SA, an inter partes review concerning a process and plant for the preparation of hydrogen and separation of carbon dioxide.

Dr. Barone primarily represents clients on the patent holder (plaintiff) side, working to develop, align, and enforce patent assets. He advises a diverse range of clients, from start-up companies to Fortune 500 corporations. His experience includes providing legal opinions on freedom-to-operate, patent validity, and enforceability, as well as handling intellectual property due diligence and managing worldwide intellectual property rights.

Currently a Shareholder and Patent Attorney at Leydig, Voit & Mayer, Ltd. since May 2018, Dr. Barone was previously a partner at Lathrop & Gage LLP (since 2012) and Greenlee Sullivan PC (from 2001 to 2012). He has significant experience in adversarial proceedings, including litigation in U.S. courts, and regularly appears in inter partes reviews (IPR), post-grant reviews (PGR), reissues, and derivation proceedings before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office.

Dr. Barone earned his J.D. from the University of Colorado School of Law in 2002. He also holds a Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Colorado (1995) and a B.S. in Chemistry from Dickinson College (1990).
