Shelby Elizabeth Farrand

Shelby Elizabeth Farrand is a patent litigator at Fish & Richardson, where her practice also encompasses trademark and copyright litigation. Her experience in patent matters includes claim construction, infringement, and invalidity issues. She represents clients across a range of industries, including consumer products, internet, media, automotive, and pharmaceuticals. Her practice interests include FRAND, Hatch-Waxman, design patent obviousness, standard essential patents, and issues related to Internet Service Providers (ISPs).

Farrand primarily focuses on defending operating companies, with three of her four tracked appearances being on the defendant side. She served as Lead Counsel for the defendant in Valtrus Innovations Ltd. et al. v. FedEx Corporation et al., a case involving alleged infringement of software patents. In connection with this litigation, her client, FedEx Corporation, initiated multiple inter partes review (IPR) proceedings against Valtrus Innovations Ltd. Farrand has experience drafting IPR petitions and briefs before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board, providing her with a strategic perspective on parallel proceedings and validity challenges.

She is an alumna of the University of Houston Law Center, where she earned her J.D. cum laude in 2024. Farrand also holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering with a minor in Labor Studies and Employment Relations from Pennsylvania State University, earned in 2017. She is admitted to the State Bar of Texas, with a license date of October 7, 2024.
