Sanjeet Dutta

Sanjeet Dutta is a seasoned intellectual property litigator with a practice focused on high-stakes patent and trade secret disputes in federal courts, before the International Trade Commission (ITC), and at the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). His technological expertise spans artificial intelligence, machine learning, semiconductors, robotics, software security, computer vision, image and video signal processing, big data analytics, networking, and advanced computing, informed by his electrical engineering background.

Throughout his career, Mr. Dutta has primarily represented defendants, including major technology companies. He has secured complete defense victories for DRAM companies in ITC investigations and successfully invalidated numerous litigated patents before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. Notable defense work includes representing Google in patent litigation related to location-based services and Breeze in ITC patent infringement litigation concerning vaping devices. He also represented Waymo in a prominent trade-secrets dispute against Uber Technologies Inc. His tracked appearances include at least one defendant-side representation while at Goodwin Procter.

Currently a partner at Foley & Lardner LLP, Mr. Dutta joined the firm in February 2026, transitioning from Goodwin Procter, where he was also a partner. Prior to Goodwin Procter, he was a partner at Steptoe & Johnson. His practice extends beyond litigation to include advising companies on patent prosecution, intellectual property strategy, portfolio development, and IP issues related to venture financings, mergers, acquisitions, technology transfers, and licensing. He also works with litigation funding entities to enforce patent rights.

Mr. Dutta is highly active in PTAB proceedings, having handled numerous matters and successfully challenged and defended patents through inter partes and ex parte reexaminations. He earned his J.D. from The George Washington University in 1999 and a B.S. from the University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign in 1996. He was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1999 and is also admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Ninth and Federal Circuits, and various U.S. District Courts, including the Northern District of California and the Eastern District of Texas.
