Ryan VanGrack

Ryan VanGrack is an in-house attorney with a practice focused on litigation and regulatory matters within the financial technology and digital asset sectors. His patent litigation experience, as tracked, primarily involves defending operating companies against assertions of patent infringement.

His specialty areas include technologies related to high-frequency trading, particularly involving field-programmable gate array (FPGA) hardware and clock domain management technology. More broadly, his legal and litigation work encompasses FinTech, blockchain, and digital assets, including navigating complex regulatory investigations and enforcement actions in the cryptocurrency space. He currently serves as the Vice President of Legal and Global Head of Litigation at Coinbase, where he oversees regulatory investigations, civil litigation, employment, IP, and consumer matters globally.

Before joining Coinbase in September 2024, Mr. VanGrack was the Managing Director and General Counsel at Citadel Securities for approximately three years, managing all legal affairs in the U.S. and North/South America, including litigation, corporate, and regulatory matters. In this role, he defended Citadel Securities against HFT Solutions Technologies, LLC v. Citadel Securities, LLC, a patent infringement lawsuit concerning high-frequency trading technologies. Citadel Securities filed a counterclaim in this case, seeking a declaratory judgment of invalidity and non-infringement of the asserted patents. Prior to his in-house roles, he served in government as Senior Advisor to Chair Mary Jo White at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, where he advised on enforcement and examinations, launched the FinTech Working Group, and oversaw blockchain-related policy. He also served in the White House as Deputy Associate Counsel under President Obama and was an attorney at Williams & Connolly.
