Specialty & background
Ryan K. Yagura is a highly experienced patent litigator and the Chair of O'Melveny & Myers LLP's Intellectual Property and Technology Practice. His practice focuses predominantly on defending leading technology companies in complex patent infringement matters, with 9 of his 11 tracked appearances being on the defendant side. He handles a wide range of technologies, including consumer electronics, smartphones, tablets, laptops (MPEG video compression, graphics processors, microprocessors, wireless/cellular, LCD displays, memory), automotive software, connected-vehicle technology (CarPlay), streaming media delivery and interactive guides, Power over Ethernet (PoE) standards, and more recently, eSIM and 5G technologies.
Mr. Yagura has secured significant outcomes for his clients. He served as lead counsel for Hyundai in Mimzi, LLC v. He also represented BAMTech, LLC in Adeia Media Holdings LLC et al. v. BAMTech, LLC et al., a dispute over streaming media and interactive guide technology that resolved via a stipulated dismissal with prejudice in December 2025, suggesting a confidential settlement. His notable successes also include prevailing on summary judgment for a major defense and aerospace company, defeating patent infringement claims seeking over $150 million, and securing a win for Hyundai in the Federal Circuit regarding improper venue.
He possesses extensive experience leading both offensive and defensive cases in District Court and ITC litigation, including patent infringement, trade secret misappropriation, breach of technology licensing contracts, and standard-setting disputes. Mr. Yagura is also active in post-grant proceedings, having practiced before the USPTO in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings.
Mr. Yagura is admitted to practice in California and Texas, as well as before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office. He earned his J.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1998, where he was Order of the Coif, and holds an M.S. in Material Science & Engineering from Stanford University (1995) and a B.S. in Engineering from Harvey Mudd College (1993).
