Ryan Dykal

Ryan Dykal is a prominent patent litigator and currently serves as a co-leader of the patent litigation practice at Boies Schiller Flexner LLP, a role he assumed upon joining the firm in May 2024 from Shook Hardy & Bacon. His practice is dedicated to high-stakes intellectual property disputes spanning a broad array of technology sectors. These include telecommunications, computing, semiconductors, industrial applications, medical devices, software, consumer electronics, and data management technologies.

Mr. Dykal maintains a balanced practice, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in patent litigation. He has achieved substantial success for his clients, securing over $1 billion in verdicts and settlements for plaintiffs and defeating hundreds of millions in claims for defense clients. Notable outcomes include a $339 million jury award for a software startup in a video streaming patent dispute, a $140 million jury verdict (affirmed by the Federal Circuit) in a VoIP technology case, and securing a favorable settlement in a case seeking $525 million in damages just before closing arguments. On the defense side, he has successfully obtained summary judgment in LED chip layer disputes, invalidated patent claims related to telecommunications protocols under 35 U.S.C. § 101, and secured dismissals in NFC payment technology disputes. He was also counsel for the defendant in Samsung Display Co., Ltd. v. BOE Technology Group Co., during his association with Fish & Richardson.

His experience extends to appellate proceedings before the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and he frequently handles matters before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Mr. Dykal is recognized for his contributions to discussions on PTAB trends and global patent enforcement strategies.

Admitted to practice in Missouri and New York, Mr. Dykal is also registered to practice before the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, various U.S. District Courts, and the U.S. Courts of Appeals for the Federal and Eighth Circuits. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law, where he served on the UMKC Law Review and Moot Court Board, and holds a B.A. in Physics from Washington University in St. Louis.
