Specialty & background

Ryan D. Dykal is a prominent patent litigator and Co-Leader of the Patent Litigation practice at Boies Schiller Flexner LLP. He specializes in high-stakes intellectual property disputes across a diverse range of technologies, including telecommunications (VoIP, networking security protocols), computing (video streaming, content delivery networks, software), semiconductors, industrial, medical devices, and mechanical innovations such as hands-free footwear.

While his tracked appearances show a plaintiff-side emphasis (5 plaintiff, 1 defendant), Dykal maintains a balanced practice representing both patent holders and accused infringers. He has secured over $1 billion in verdicts and settlements for his plaintiff clients and successfully defended claims worth hundreds of millions for his defense clients. Before joining Boies Schiller Flexner in May 2024, he was a partner at Shook, Hardy & Bacon L.L.P. for over 15 years.

His notable cases include serving as lead counsel for HandsFree Labs and Fast IP in ongoing patent infringement litigation against Skechers U.S.A., Inc., concerning hands-free footwear technology, which also involves parallel proceedings at the Unified Patent Court. He is also lead counsel for Sandpiper CDN, LLC v. Microsoft Corp. Earlier in his career, he secured a $339 million jury award for a software startup in a video streaming patent dispute against an internet search giant, and a $140 million jury verdict, affirmed by the Federal Circuit, in a VoIP technology case for a telecommunications company. He has also successfully defended clients, obtaining summary judgments of non-infringement or invalidity, some affirmed by the Federal Circuit.

A registered patent attorney, Dykal is active in proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), having successfully defeated institution of inter partes review in prior matters. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from the University of Missouri – Kansas City School of Law and a B.A. in Physics from Washington University in St. Louis. He is admitted to practice in Missouri and New York, the U.S. Patent & Trademark Office, and several federal courts, including the Federal Circuit.
