Ross Garsson

Ross Spencer Garsson is a seasoned intellectual property litigator and patent attorney with extensive experience spanning over 25 years. His practice at Dickinson Wright focuses on intellectual property litigation, patent prosecution, and intellectual property portfolio management. He frequently handles matters involving diverse technology areas, including chemical, nanotechnology, medical devices, semiconductor, and computer technologies. Notably, Mr. Garsson has worked with nanotechnology institutes at Rice University and the University of Texas at Dallas, procuring and licensing technologies, particularly for carbon nanotubes.

Garsson demonstrates a balanced practice, representing both plaintiffs and defendants in patent disputes. While tracked as counsel for the plaintiff in Force MOS Technology v. ASUSTek Computer, Inc. et al., his experience includes representing plaintiffs like 3M and DDB Technologies in patent infringement and International Trade Commission (ITC) proceedings. He has also successfully defended clients, securing a jury verdict of non-infringement and patent invalidity for Xitronix in a dispute over semiconductor chip evaluation devices, and representing Quicken Loans against patent infringement claims.

Currently a member of Dickinson Wright's Intellectual Property Litigation team, Mr. Garsson is involved in litigation across state and federal district courts, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and the U.S. International Trade Commission. His experience also encompasses patent prosecution at the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). He has presented on topics such as the "New" On-Sale Bar under the America Invents Act (AIA) and strategies for strengthening PTAB trial records for appeal, indicating familiarity with post-grant review proceedings. Prior to Dickinson Wright, a notable outcome from his career includes securing a $6.4 million jury verdict for Bain Consulting (now Growtheorem Consulting) in a breach of contract suit related to healthcare payment technologies.

Mr. Garsson earned his J.D. with honors from The University of Texas School of Law in 1992, and holds a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a B.A. in Mathematics, both cum laude from Rice University in 1986. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and various federal courts, including the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal, Fifth, and Ninth Circuits, and all four U.S. District Courts in Texas.
