Specialty & background

Richard V. Wells is a highly experienced patent litigation attorney and a partner in Baker McKenzie's Commercial, Data, IPTech & Trade Practice Group, based in their Washington D.C. office. He has over two decades of experience focusing on patent due diligence, prosecution, and strategic counseling. His practice spans diverse technology areas, including medical devices, oilfield services, heavy industry, and software sectors. He also has expertise in digital media, computer software, technology, media, pharmaceuticals, and luxury and fashion sectors.

Wells represents clients in both asserting and defending against patent infringement claims in federal district courts and before the International Trade Commission. He has also successfully asserted multiple patents for an oilfield services company, securing a judgment of willful infringement and a permanent injunction after a two-week trial.

Wells is also active in post-grant proceedings, regularly appearing before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) to advocate in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings. His experience includes successfully asserting an IPR challenge, leading to a favorable settlement for a handset manufacturer. Before rejoining Baker McKenzie, he served as intellectual property counsel for WesternGeco, a subsidiary of Schlumberger, where he managed a global patent portfolio.

Mr. Wells earned his J.D. cum laude from the University of Houston Law Center in 2001 and holds a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (1998).
