Richard Michael Koehl

Richard Michael Koehl is a patent litigation partner at Blue Peak Law Group, specializing in complex intellectual property disputes across a broad spectrum of technologies. His practice encompasses areas such as semiconductor technology, software, consumer electronics, wireless technology, biotechnology, medical devices, life sciences, and pharmaceuticals. Dr. Koehl possesses a robust technical background, holding a Ph.D. from M.I.T. for his work on spatial and temporal ultrafast imaging and control of terahertz wave packets, for which he also holds a patent.

While tracked appearances indicate a plaintiff-side focus, Mr. Koehl's firm represents both plaintiffs and defendants globally, and his experience includes acting as trial counsel for plaintiffs in district court matters. He has significant appellate experience, notably serving as co-counsel for the petitioner in TC Heartland LLC v. Kraft Foods Group Brands LLC (U.S. Supreme Court, 2017), a seminal patent venue case. His involvement in Supreme Court cases also extends to authoring amicus curiae briefs in matters such as Google LLC v. Oracle America, Inc. and Oil States Energy Services, LLC v. Greene's Energy Group, LLC.

Mr. Koehl is also experienced in post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), including Inter Partes Review (IPR), Post Grant Review (PGR), and Ex Parte Reexamination, both challenging and defending patent validity. Before joining Blue Peak Law Group, his career included positions at prominent firms such as Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP, Fried, Frank, Harris, Shriver & Jacobson LLP, Gibson, Dunn & Crutcher LLP, and Kirkland & Ellis LLP. He earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2003, his Ph.D. from M.I.T. in 2000, and a B.A. from Rice University in 1995. He is admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, the Federal Circuit, and various other federal appellate and district courts.
