Specialty & background

Richard F. Giunta is a highly experienced patent litigator with a strong focus on electrical, computer, and software technologies. His practice encompasses a wide range of areas including computer and software technology, medical devices, consumer products, storage systems, digital rights management, automatic speech recognition, semiconductor processing, graphics systems, text-to-speech synthesis, natural language understanding, and wireless networking systems. Prior to his legal career, he worked as a senior hardware design engineer in a CPU development group and holds a patent related to memory diagnostic systems, underscoring his deep technical background.

Giunta's patent litigation practice reflects work on both the plaintiff and defendant sides, as evidenced by his appearances for Amphenol Corporation as plaintiff and Savant Systems, Inc. as defendant in tracked cases. This balanced experience extends to his robust Post-Grant Proceedings practice where he represents both patent owners and petitioners before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB).

He is a Shareholder at Wolf, Greenfield & Sacks, P.C., a firm recognized as one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the country. Giunta is a nationally recognized leader in handling trials before the PTAB, having handled over 200 matters including inter partes review (IPR) and post-grant review (PGR) proceedings. His significant achievements include prevailing on issues of first impression and in matters valued at over one billion dollars. He was named the PTAB Practitioner of the Year by Managing Intellectual Property in 2021 and consistently ranks among the top 1% of PTAB attorneys for winning percentage and activity. Notable PTAB representations include successfully asserting sovereign immunity for the University of Florida Research Foundation in IPRs and persuading the PTAB to deny institution in five petitions filed against patents asserted by LiTL against Lenovo.

Giunta earned his B.S. in Electrical Engineering, summa cum laude, from Tufts University and his J.D., summa cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School. He is admitted to practice in Massachusetts, before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, in the U.S. District Court, District of Massachusetts, and before the Federal Circuit.
