Ricardo Joel Bonilla

Ricardo Joel Bonilla is a seasoned patent litigator at Fish & Richardson, focusing his practice on intellectual property and commercial litigation with a strong emphasis on patent disputes. His technical foundation stems from a B.S. in Software Engineering, and his experience spans wireless technologies, software development, and various programming languages including C++, C#, SQL, HTML, and Java. This expertise supports his work across diverse technology areas, such as software, mobile and web interfaces, financial management systems, and standard essential patents.

Bonilla primarily defends operating companies in patent infringement lawsuits, as evidenced by his three defendant-side appearances in tracked cases and consistent recognition for his defense work. His notable defense victories include securing summary judgment of non-infringement for Hertz in a patent case involving website encryption technology and representing Expedia, Orbitz, and Google in similar matters. He also obtained a Rule 12(b)(6) dismissal based on patent ineligibility for a financial management system in Finnavations LLC v. Payoneer Inc. Further successes include a Federal Circuit affirmance of nearly $1 million in attorneys' fees for Bed Bath & Beyond Inc. and the invalidation of patents related to mobile website navigation interfaces for defendants in EMG Technology litigation. He currently represents ByteDance Ltd. and TikTok Pte. Ltd. as defendants in Cellspin Soft, Inc. v. ByteDance Ltd. et al.

Bonilla possesses significant experience with Post-Grant proceedings and Inter Partes Reviews (IPRs) before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He successfully represented Tiffany and Company as a petitioner, obtaining a final written decision invalidating claims related to microinscribing gemstones. In the ongoing Cellspin Soft v. ByteDance litigation, he is involved in IPR petitions filed on behalf of TikTok to challenge patent validity. Bonilla has built his entire patent litigation career at Fish & Richardson, joining the firm in 2012 after participating in its 1L Diversity Fellowship Program and serving as a summer associate. He earned his J.D., Order of the Coif, from Texas Tech University School of Law in 2012 and a B.S. cum laude in Software Engineering from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2009.
