Specialty & background

Philip Wang is a patent litigator at Russ August & Kabat, focusing his practice primarily on representing patent owners in complex infringement disputes. His litigation experience largely centers on technologies related to wireless communications, including mobile device management, eSIM provisioning, wireless network offloading, and cellular network management. Additionally, he has handled cases involving high-frequency trading (HFT) and Field-Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) hardware.

Wang predominantly works on the plaintiff side, with six out of seven tracked appearances representing plaintiffs, often patent assertion entities (PAEs) such as Headwater Research LLC and HFT Solutions LLC. All his tracked cases have been with Russ August & Kabat, where he joined in 2016 after previous tenures at Irell & Manella and Latham & Watkins.

He has been involved in several high-profile patent litigation outcomes. As lead counsel for Headwater Research LLC, he was part of the trial team that secured a unanimous jury verdict of $278.8 million against Samsung Electronics in the Eastern District of Texas in April 2025, for infringement of mobile device management patents. Just months later, in July 2025, he was also on the trial team that obtained a $175 million jury verdict for Headwater Research LLC against Verizon Communications, involving wireless communications technology. Other cases for Headwater Research LLC against Verizon, Charter Communications, and Comcast Cable Communications, concerning eSIM technology and network management, have resulted in voluntary dismissals without prejudice or are ongoing.

Wang also has experience defending patents in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings. His firm has represented Headwater Research LLC as the patent owner in multiple IPRs initiated by Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd., some of which were denied institution by the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) based on factors considering parallel district court litigation. He earned his J.D. from Columbia Law School in 2008 and was admitted to the California bar in 2009.
