Specialty & background

Paul K. Vickrey is a veteran intellectual property litigator with a practice focused on representing patent holders in federal district court. His work primarily involves patent enforcement for plaintiffs, a focus consistent with his long tenure at Niro, Haller & Niro, a firm widely known for representing patent assertion entities. In 2017, he co-founded the successor firm Vitale, Vickrey, Niro, Solon & Gasey LLP, which continues to handle patent enforcement and other complex commercial litigation. His plaintiff-side representation is reflected in his role as lead counsel for Lepton Computing LLC in its patent infringement suit against Samsung over foldable smartphone technology.

Over his career, Vickrey has secured several significant trial victories. Notable publicly reported results include a $19.2 million judgment for inventors of a computer mouse, an $11 million judgment for trade secret misappropriation against Iowa Beef Processors, Inc., and two patent infringement jury verdicts won within a 21-day period in 2005. His broader litigation experience also includes securing a $100 million fraud verdict against W.R. Grace & Co. The technology areas in his patent cases have included computer hardware and mechanical devices.

While Vickrey's primary focus is district court litigation, he has experience in matters originating from the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He was on the brief for the appellant in Scientific Plastic Products, Inc. v. Biotage AB, a Federal Circuit appeal from a PTAB decision in an inter partes reexamination, a precursor to the modern inter partes review (IPR) proceeding.

Vickrey earned his J.D. from Loyola University Chicago School of Law in 1980 and a B.A. from the University of Illinois in 1977. He was admitted to the Illinois bar in 1980.
