Patrick M. Dunn

Patrick M. Dunn is a patent litigation attorney with a focus on high-stakes intellectual property disputes in federal district courts. His practice encompasses a broad technical background, particularly in computer science, electronics, and telecommunications. Before his legal career, he held engineering roles at companies such as Motorola, Dell, Freescale, and THX, and served as a Principal Engineer at Intellectual Ventures, contributing to his deep understanding of technology. He is also a named inventor on nine U.S. patents.

Dunn represents both plaintiffs and defendants in patent litigation, although his tracked appearances primarily show defendant-side representation. He is currently Counsel at Brown Rudnick LLP. Prior to this, he was an Associate and later Of Counsel at Spencer Fane, having joined that firm in November 2021.

A notable case in his experience includes representing Eight Khz LLC as a defendant in Unified Patents v. Eight Khz LLC. In related proceedings, the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) found patents owned by Eight Khz, concerning methods of delivering binaural sound through electronic earphones, to be invalid. A subsequent appeal to the Federal Circuit (Meta Platforms v. Eight Khz) was voluntarily dismissed by the parties, with each side bearing its own costs. Dunn also possesses experience in patent monetization, licensing, and managing inter partes reviews (IPR) before the PTAB.

He earned his J.D. from the University of Akron School of Law in 2018, an M.S. from Kent State University in 2000, and a B.S. from the University of Akron in 1988. He is admitted to practice in Texas, Ohio, and the District of Columbia, as well as the U.S. District Courts for the Western and Eastern Districts of Texas.
