Minna Jay

Minna Jay is a Partner at Russ August & Kabat, specializing in complex patent and intellectual property litigation. Her practice focuses heavily on plaintiff-side patent infringement disputes, frequently representing patent assertion entities (PAEs) such as Headwater Research LLC. Out of six tracked appearances, five have been on the plaintiff's side, and one on the defendant's side. She has experience across a range of technologies, including smart thermostats, data compression, wireless communications, electronic storage devices, and semiconductors, with cases often involving mobile device connectivity and wireless communication patents.

Ms. Jay has been part of trial teams that secured significant jury verdicts. She was on the team that obtained a $278,791,460 jury verdict for Headwater Research LLC against Samsung Electronics America Inc., et al. for infringement of wireless communications patents. Additionally, she was a member of the trial team that won a $175,000,000 jury verdict for Headwater Research LLC against Verizon Communications; however, this verdict was later tossed on the grounds that Verizon reasonably expected not to be sued by Headwater due to prior investment. She was also involved in the EcoFactor, Inc. v. Google LLC case, which resulted in a jury verdict of patent infringement against Google.

Her practice also includes significant experience before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) and the ITC, in addition to federal district courts. Russ August & Kabat's attorneys have a strong record defending against patent challenges at the PTAB, having handled over 400 IPR petitions with a high rate of favorable outcomes for patent owners.

Ms. Jay earned her J.D. from Loyola Law School in 2015, where she received First Honors in Trial Advocacy and in Legal Research and Writing. She holds a B.A. from the University of California, Los Angeles (2011) and was admitted to the State Bar of California on December 3, 2015.
