Michael T. Renaud — Patent Litigation Practice Summary

Michael T. Renaud is a Boston-based Member of Mintz and chair of the firm's Intellectual Property Division (also a member of its Policy Committee). His practice is concentrated on high-stakes patent enforcement and monetization across semiconductors/GPU technology, telecommunications and network software, embedded microprocessors, cellular devices, e-commerce, and voice-recognition software, with a particularly deep Section 337 practice before the International Trade Commission (ITC). Mintz describes him as a leader of its semiconductor and ITC work; Patexia has ranked him among the most active ITC complainant attorneys.

The tracked docket skews clearly to the plaintiff/enforcement side (5 of 6 appearances), largely for patent-owner monetization clients — Parus Holdings (voice-command/speech-recognition patents asserted against Microsoft, Samsung, and Google in W.D. Tex.) and RealTime Data (data-compression patents against Acronis in D. Mass.) — as well as for operating companies such as AMD. He also takes defense-side work, including a notable ITC defense for Juul Labs, and his practice description emphasizes representing both patent owners and accused infringers. Most prominent matters: he led AMD's ITC enforcement against LG/VIZIO/MediaTek/Sigma Designs (Inv. 337-TA-1044, 2018) and the later AMD v. TCL/Realtek GPU dispute, which ended in ITC limited exclusion and cease-and-desist orders blocking infringing TCL smart TVs (2024–2025), followed by a favorable Customs enforcement settlement. He also led Juul Labs' ITC defense against Altria/NJOY vaporizer patents, where the full Commission affirmed a non-infringement finding (an Am Law Litigation Daily "Litigator of the Week Runner-Up" honor). The Parus and RealTime cases each ran alongside coordinated IPRs — Google (IPR2022-00523) and Samsung (IPR2022-01502) challenged the Parus patents, and Acronis filed IPRs against the RealTime patents — with Renaud's team defending the patents in those reviews; the RealTime v. Acronis case ended in a stipulated dismissal with prejudice in January 2024. One caveat: in late October 2025, former client Parus filed a malpractice suit in W.D. Tex. naming Mintz, Renaud, and colleague Michael McNamara, after Mintz sued Parus for roughly $2 million in unpaid success fees; those disputes are pending and unrelated to the litigation outcomes above.
