Michael J. Kasdan

Michael J. Kasdan is a seasoned patent litigator and intellectual property strategist, currently serving as a Partner in the Intellectual Property Practice at Wiggin and Dana LLP in their New York City office. He leverages a strong technical background in electrical engineering to counsel clients on a wide array of technologies, including consumer electronics, wireless devices, batteries, mechanical devices, medical products and devices, computer architecture, software (including open-source), networks, semiconductor chips, internet and e-commerce platforms, blockchain, digital assets, and IP in Web3. His practice encompasses intellectual property litigation, licensing, portfolio analysis, and strategic counseling.

Mr. Kasdan demonstrates a balanced practice, developing both offensive and defensive patent strategies for organizations of all sizes. He has negotiated, defended, and asserted IP rights across various forums, including federal courts, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, and the International Trade Commission. While the tracked case shows an appearance on the plaintiff's side in Apple Inc. et al. v. VirnetX Inc. as Of Counsel, he was also part of the team that successfully invalidated the asserted VirnetX patents through Inter Partes Review (IPR) proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB) on behalf of Mangrove Partners, leading to the vacatur of a substantial judgment against Apple on appeal. This highlights his capability in both asserting and defending against patent claims, particularly in complex, high-stakes matters before the PTAB and Federal Circuit.

Prior to joining Wiggin and Dana in 2014, Mr. Kasdan was a partner at Amster, Rothstein & Ebenstein LLP and also practiced at Kirkland & Ellis LLP. He is recognized for his contributions to IP strategy, having been named a "Super Lawyer" and included in the IAM Strategy 300 as a World-Leading IP Strategist multiple times.

Mr. Kasdan earned his B.S.E. Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania and his J.D. Magna Cum Laude from NYU School of Law, where he now serves as an Adjunct Professor.
