Michael J. Kahn

Michael P. Kahn is a highly experienced patent litigator focusing on complex disputes across a broad range of technologies. His practice encompasses electrical, computer science, mechanical engineering, materials science, pharmaceuticals, medical devices, e-commerce, and software. Kahn also handles trade secret litigation and is actively involved in matters concerning generative artificial intelligence, machine learning, and other emerging technologies. He represents both patent owners and defendants, including operating companies, funders, and insurers, and advises on litigation finance strategies.

Kahn is currently a partner at Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld LLP, where he joined in 2015, and was previously a partner at Ropes & Gray, beginning his career at Fish & Neave. While the majority of his tracked appearances are with Akin Gump, he also has an appearance with Quinn Emanuel Urquhart & Sullivan.

His notable cases include representing D&M Holdings Inc. in Sonos, Inc. v. D&M Holdings Inc., a patent infringement case concerning wireless multiroom audio systems, where a jury found D&M liable for willful infringement of Sonos's patents. He also acted as plaintiff's counsel in Phenix Longhorn, LLC v. AU Optronics Corporation et al., a patent infringement action involving LCD panel modules. Further, Kahn successfully represented Boston Scientific in multi-front patent and trade secret litigations against Nevro Corp. related to spinal cord stimulation technology, which resulted in a $20 million jury verdict for willful infringement and a favorable settlement. He also has significant experience before the Patent Trial and Appeals Board (PTAB), regularly representing clients in inter partes review (IPR) proceedings and other administrative tribunals.

Kahn is admitted to practice in New York. He earned his J.D. from Fordham University School of Law in 2001 and his B.A. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1998.
