Michael Bonella

Michael J. Bonella is a seasoned patent litigation attorney and the IP Litigation Practice Group Lead at Flaster Greenberg, where he has been a Shareholder since joining the firm in January 2020. With over 25 years of experience, his practice encompasses complex patent litigation across a diverse range of technology areas, including electrical hardware and software, medical devices, consumer products, and telecommunications. His technical background, including certifications in nuclear and advanced electrical engineering from the U.S. Naval Submarine Program, provides him with unique insight into these fields.

Bonella is a first-chair litigator who represents both plaintiffs and defendants in district court actions, demonstrating a balanced approach to patent disputes. This is reflected in his tracked appearances, which include serving as lead counsel for the defendant in Rocket Media, LLC d/b/a Launch Labs v. Fullthrottle Technologies, LLC, and as lead counsel for the plaintiff in Fullthrottle Technologies, LLC v. Rocket Media, LLC. These cases involve patent infringement claims related to "Location Determination Using Anonymous Browser Data" and technologies for product marketing using websites.

Throughout his career, Bonella has handled significant intellectual property matters, including successfully arguing before the Federal Circuit on behalf of Biosig Instruments, Inc. This led to the Federal Circuit's establishment of the indefiniteness standard adopted by the U.S. Supreme Court in Biosig Instruments, Inc. v. Nautilus. He has also achieved successful outcomes defending clients such as Mapillary and Neuronetics, Inc. against patent infringement allegations. His experience extends to post-grant proceedings, including inter partes reviews (IPRs) before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, notably with an IPR related to the Rocket Media and Fullthrottle Technologies dispute.

Michael Bonella is admitted to practice in Pennsylvania, before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office, the U.S. Supreme Court, and the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit. He earned his J.D., magna cum laude, from Duke University School of Law, an LL.M. in Trial Advocacy from Temple University, James E. Beasley School of Law, and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering, cum laude, from Villanova University.
