Michael A. Lavine

Michael A. Lavine is an accomplished patent litigator and Of Counsel at Jones Day, where his practice is concentrated on intellectual property disputes across a diverse range of technologies. His expertise spans areas such as video technology, digital displays, integrated circuits, cryptography, wireless communications, user interfaces, digital rights management, and medical device control. While his tracked appearances include representing both plaintiffs and defendants, his broader practice at Jones Day heavily involves defending operating companies against patent infringement allegations, often brought by non-practicing entities (NPEs).

Mr. Lavine has a strong record in significant patent litigation. He defended Google LLC in a declaratory judgment action and subsequent infringement suit brought by K. Mizra LLC, an NPE asserting patents related to machine learning and wireless communication against Google's AI Studio and Nest devices. He also represents Qualcomm Incorporated against infringement claims by Onesta IP, LLC, another NPE, involving patents related to shared virtual memory management and CPU/GPU task management in Snapdragon processors. Notably, he secured a rare writ of mandamus from the Federal Circuit for HP Inc., ordering a patent litigation transfer, and served as lead trial counsel for Synopsys Inc. in a competitor patent case. His experience extends to the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), where he has argued cases and served as first chair in an inter partes review (IPR) trial.

He is admitted to practice in California, New York, and Connecticut, and is registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Mr. Lavine earned his J.D. from New York University in 2009 and holds a B.S. in Computer Engineering from Syracuse University, awarded in 2001.
