Miao Liu

Miao Liu is a litigation counsel in O'Melveny & Myers' Washington, DC office, focusing on patent litigation, PTAB proceedings, and ITC investigations. Her practice encompasses a broad range of high-technology areas, including consumer electronics, artificial intelligence, blockchain and cryptocurrency, computer products, semiconductor manufacturing and inspection, and satellite communication. Liu's technical background as a former software engineer and her graduate studies in logic programming and artificial intelligence further inform her approach to complex technological disputes.

Liu primarily represents defendants in patent disputes. Her experience includes defending Samsung against Scramoge in cases related to wireless charging for smartphones and tablets in the Western District of Texas. She also secured a summary judgment win for Colgate-Palmolive and Tom's of Maine in a false advertising class-action case and represented Tata Consultancy Services in trade secret litigation involving source code analysis.

Her practice also features significant experience in post-grant proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). Notably, Liu prepared IPR petitions on behalf of Uber Technologies, which resulted in determinations that challenged claims related to location tracking devices were unpatentable. She also successfully challenged a patent for SharkNinja concerning cleaning robot navigation, leading to the cancellation of all claims.

Liu is admitted to practice in the District of Columbia and California, and is registered to practice before the United States Patent & Trademark Office (USPTO). She earned her J.D. magna cum laude and Order of the Coif from Georgetown University, and holds an M.S. and B.S. magna cum laude in Computer Science and Mathematics from the University of Nebraska at Omaha.
