Matthew R. Shapiro

Matthew R. Shapiro is a highly experienced patent litigator with a practice focused on complex disputes across a broad spectrum of technology areas. His expertise spans advanced electronics, including video coding, wireless content distribution, streaming technologies, consumer electronics (such as Wi-Fi, 3G, LTE, 5G, and user interfaces), automotive components (like adaptive noise cancellation), industrial systems, and software. Prior to his legal career, he worked as a computer and software engineer at Lockheed Martin, developing software for sonar navigation and train control systems, and is a co-inventor on a U.S. patent for an Automated Passenger Screening System.

Mr. Shapiro primarily represents defendants, particularly operating companies, in high-stakes patent infringement cases. His track record includes defending clients against assertions by non-practicing entities (NPEs) and patent monetization entities (PAEs). For instance, he served as counsel for Roku, Inc. in the significant "VideoLabs, Inc. v. Roku, Inc." litigation, which involved seven patents related to video coding and streaming technology and was ultimately dismissed with prejudice following a confidential resolution. He has also defended manufacturers against alleged infringement concerning network-based lighting control products and LCD backlighting/LED taillight technologies.

He began his patent litigation career at Ropes & Gray, where he rose to counsel and then partner, before joining Sheppard Mullin in September 2025 as part of a 21-lawyer intellectual property litigation group. Mr. Shapiro possesses substantial experience with proceedings before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB), having served as counsel in more than thirty inter partes review (IPR) proceedings. This includes direct involvement in IPRs related to his district court cases, where he has navigated the interplay between administrative challenges and litigation stays.

Mr. Shapiro earned his B.S. in Computer Science and Engineering from the University of Connecticut, where he graduated first in his engineering class, and his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School in 2012. He was admitted to practice law in 2013 and is licensed in New York.
