Matthew Brigham

Matthew Brigham is an accomplished patent litigator at Cooley, focusing on complex intellectual property disputes within high-technology sectors. His practice encompasses technologies such as video game hardware and software, wireless communications, integrated circuits, semiconductor processing, and PC chipsets. He also provides counsel on trade secret matters.

Throughout his career, Brigham has primarily represented defendants, including large operating companies and emerging ventures, in patent infringement actions across U.S. courts and before the International Trade Commission (ITC). This defendant-side preference aligns with his tracked case appearances. He joined Cooley in 2003 as an associate, became a partner for over 15 years, and currently serves as Of Counsel.

Brigham has been involved in several prominent cases, securing significant outcomes for his clients. He was part of the Cooley team that achieved a decisive victory for Caihong Display Devices Co Ltd. in a high-stakes ITC investigation in April 2026. In April 2022, he helped obtain summary judgment for Qualcomm in ParkerVision v. Qualcomm, a contested patent infringement lawsuit, arguing the motion for summary judgment alongside Eamonn Gardner. His experience also includes serving as counsel for respondents such as HTC Corporation and Motorola Mobility in ITC investigations involving semiconductor design and fabrication, and for Ouster in an ITC investigation concerning LiDAR devices. Additionally, he represented Nintendo Co. Ltd. in patent infringement actions related to video game console features.

In addition to his district court and ITC work, Brigham is a registered patent attorney with experience in Patent Office proceedings, including IPR and PGR matters. He is admitted to practice in California and before the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, and various U.S. District Courts. He earned his J.D. from the University of California, Davis School of Law (King Hall) in 1997 and a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of California, San Diego in 1994.
