Martin Ellison

Martin Ellison is a patent litigation attorney at DLA Piper, with a practice primarily focused on defending clients against infringement claims. His experience spans various complex technologies, including artificial intelligence and neural networks, image processing and analysis, chemical formulations and medical devices, automotive parts, biometric authentication, security and encryption, wireless communications, and semiconductor fabrication.

Ellison has a notable track record in federal courts, the International Trade Commission (ITC), and before the Patent Trial and Appeal Board (PTAB). He played a key role in the significant defense victory for Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. in Maxell, Ltd. v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., where a jury found no infringement across five asserted patents, and two patents were also invalidated. This outcome denied Maxell's requests for damages and an injunction, marking a complete defense win for Samsung in a case involving smart home appliances, smartphones, and connected device technology. He has also served as Support Counsel for Samsung in SoftView, LLC v. Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd. et al., a case concerning the display of internet content in mobile settings, including smartphones and tablets.

Before entering law, Ellison served in the United States Army as an intelligence officer after graduating from West Point. He earned his J.D. from Stanford Law School and holds a B.S. in Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering from the United States Military Academy. He is admitted to practice in California.
